šŸŗ From Cask to Craft: The Story of the Wine Bottle šŸ·

ree

šŸ•°ļø First created in 1650, wine bottles were made from blackish-green glass — strong enough to transport wine and dark enough to protect it from light.

āš±ļø These bottles soon replaced earthenware and stoneware jugsĀ that once ferried wine from cask to table.

šŸ–ļø Many early glass bottles mirrored pottery designs — some had handles and seals, earning them the title of servingĀ or decanter bottles.

šŸ”– Glass seals — circular glass pads impressed with a metal stamp — were popular from the mid-17th century, often carrying:• šŸ· Name of the tavern• 🧾 Initials of merchant or drinker• šŸ“… Dated stamps (Earliest: 1657)

šŸ“‰ Personal sealing declined after 1835Ā with mechanised branding taking over.

šŸ“ Over the next 150 years, bottle shapes evolved:• Shaft-and-globeĀ āž”ļøā€¢ Squat domesĀ āž”ļøā€¢ Cylindrical shapes — which could now be stackedĀ for aging (šŸ· known as binning) and to keep corks moist for preservation.
